Garden of the Gods mini session days are always some of my favorites. I especially love photographing toddlers and preschool-aged kids, like in this session. Their personalities shine, and every session feels a little different.
This one was especially fun. The energetic toddler boy kept us moving the whole time, and his parents fully leaned into it. That’s what made this session feel so natural and full of real moments.

Why Photos at Garden of the Gods Are Always a Favorite
One of the best things about Garden of the Gods is that it works year-round. The red rocks create a beautiful backdrop no matter the season. At the same time, the open space allows families to move, explore, and interact naturally.
Because of that, it’s perfect for capturing candid moments. You’re not just standing still—you’re experiencing the location together.

A Playful Garden of the Gods Mini Session with a Toddler
Photo sessions with a toddler always works best when we keep it playful.
Instead of expecting them to sit still, we let them lead. We let them run, climb, and explore. That keeps them engaged and happy, which makes a huge difference in the session.
When kids are free to move, everything becomes easier. The session flows better, and the photos feel more natural.

Capturing Real, Candid Moments During Mini Sessions
Mini sessions move quickly, so capturing candid moments takes a slightly different approach.
We don’t have as much time to let everything unfold slowly, so I use simple prompts to help make the best use of our time. These keep things moving while still allowing for genuine interaction.
The goal is to create moments that feel real, even within a shorter timeframe. With the right pacing, we can still capture a gallery of natural, connected images.

What to Wear for Photos at Garden of the Gods
Outfits can really elevate your photos, especially at this location.
I loved how this mom’s dress complemented the red rocks. The warm tones worked beautifully for fall, and the overall look felt soft and cohesive.
I also always recommend adding a bit of white. It stands out so well against the red rock backdrop and helps brighten your images. Keeping outfits simple with a few intentional color choices makes a big impact.

Golden Hour Light at Garden of the Gods
Golden hour at Garden of the Gods is hard to beat. The way the light hits the rocks adds so much warmth and depth. It creates a soft glow that enhances both the landscape and your skin tones.
This is why timing matters so much. When everything lines up, the light adds that extra layer that makes your photos feel magical.

Is a Garden of the Gods Mini Session Right for Your Family?
A Garden of the Gods mini session is a great option for families who want a handful of updated photos in a short amount of time.
These sessions tend to work best with older kids who can stay engaged. Since everything moves fast, we need everyone ready to jump in right away.
For toddlers, I often recommend my short sessions instead. Short sessions give us a little more time to settle in while still keeping things manageable for shorter attention spans.
