If you’re wondering when to take maternity photos in Colorado, timing can make a big difference in both how you feel and how your photos turn out. The right window gives you a defined baby bump while still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session. Below, I’ll walk you through the best timing for maternity photos, along with a few key factors to consider as you plan.

Quick answer: 28–34 weeks

The best time for maternity photos is usually between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, your bump is clearly visible, and you’re still comfortable enough to enjoy your session.

Why timing matters (comfort + bump size)

Timing plays a big role in how your session feels and how your photos look. On one hand, you want a round, noticeable baby bump. On the other hand, you want to feel comfortable and able to move with ease.

If you schedule too early, your bump may not show as much. However, if you wait too long, you may feel tired or uncomfortable—especially during outdoor sessions. Finding that balance is key.

Why 28–34 Weeks Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos

Between 28 and 34 weeks seems to be that sweet spot between having a nice round belly and still being comfortable and enough for a photo session. Here in Colorado I recommend booking at the earlier end of this range because our photo sessions tend to be a little bit more adventurous. Many require a short uphill hike to reach the photo spot , you’ll want make sure you’re up for this.

What If You’re Showing Early or Late?

Every pregnancy is different, so flexibility matters.

If you’re expecting multiples or if this is your second or third pregnancy, you may start showing earlier. In that case, it’s a good idea to schedule your session on the earlier side of the timeframe.

If this is your first pregnancy, you might show a bit later. You can often wait closer to 32–34 weeks to get that fuller bump.

Seasonal Considerations

You don’t get to choose your season with maternity photos, but it’s still helpful to know what to expect.

Spring: Soft tones with early greenery and fresh growth
Summer: Lush green landscapes, golden light, and dramatic skies
Fall: Warm tones, changing leaves, and cozy textures
Winter: Snowy backdrops or clean, simple studio sessions

Each season offers a different look, so your timing may also influence the overall feel of your photos.

Outdoor vs Studio Maternity Photos

Outdoor maternity sessions offer a more adventurous feel with scenic Colorado backdrops. Think mountain views, open fields, and golden light. Garden of the Gods is a popular choice because the scenery is simply stunning!

Studio sessions, on the other hand, feel simple and timeless. The clean setting keeps the focus on you and your baby bump.

Both options are beautiful, so it really comes down to your personal style. If you love both, you can always do both. I offer a discounted studio session when it’s booked alongside an outdoor session.
