Your Fall Family Mini Session is right around the corner! These quick sessions are the perfect way to capture beautiful family memories without spending a full evening in front of the camera. But with limited time, preparing your kids ahead of time is key to making the most of every minute. This year I am offering three dates for my Colorado Springs Fall Mini Sessions.
In this post, I’ll walk you through simple, practical ways to help your kids feel ready, relaxed, and even excited for your session.
What to Tell Your Kids Before the Session

Let your kids know they’ll be doing a few family photos, and the whole thing will be super fast. You can explain that it’s important to listen closely, follow directions, and most of all—have fun!
It’s also helpful to mention that we’ll play some quick games during the session. Things like “sneak tickle attack,” “ring around the rosie,” or silly walking races help kids stay engaged and having fun. When they know it’s more play than pose, they’ll show up ready to go.
Timing is Everything: Naps and Snacks Matter

Hungry or tired kids rarely feel like smiling for the camera. So plan ahead to stick to your usual nap schedule and make sure they have a full belly before the session.
For most Fall Family Mini Sessions, the timing isn’t too late in the day, but routine still matters. The more normal their day feels, the more comfortable they’ll be.
Dress for Success and Movement!

Choose outfits your kids can move and play in. We’ll often walk a little bit, sit on the ground, or dance around together. Tight shoes, itchy fabrics, or anything uncomfortable can lead to distractions or meltdowns.
Always try on outfits a few days in advance—especially shoes! Sandals can be tricky in outdoor settings, often collecting little rocks that can stop a session in its tracks. Make sure your child feels good in what they’re wearing, and you’ll avoid unnecessary stress.
What to Bring to Your Mini Session

Since mini sessions are usually 10–15 minutes long, there’s no need to bring much. Just show up ready to go! I typically have wipes on hand for quick face cleanups and mini water bottles for thirsty kids.
Still, you might want to bring:
- A treat for AFTER the session
- A hairbrush for last-minute touch-ups
The less you have to worry about, the more relaxed you’ll feel.
Arrive Early (and Stress-Free)

Give yourself at least 20 minutes of buffer time. Traffic, finding parking, or last-minute outfit fixes can pop up and make you feel rushed.
If you’re running late, kids will often pick up on your stress—and that can show up in photos. Arriving early gives everyone time to adjust and breathe before getting in front of the camera.
Help Your Kids Feel Excited—Not Nervous

Keep the mood light and fun in the hours leading up to your Fall Family Mini Session. Hype it up like an adventure! “We’re going to play games and take a few pictures!” sounds a lot better than “You have to smile and behave.”
Avoid telling them how important the photos are or how much you’ve paid for the session. That kind of pressure can make them feel nervous instead of playful.
How I Keep Things Fun During the Session

My biggest goal during your Fall Family Mini Session is to keep things moving. I use playful prompts, quick games, and fun interactions to keep your kids engaged. We don’t linger on any one thing for too long, and we roll with whatever energy your family brings to the session.
This approach helps your kids stay present, and it brings out their most natural smiles.
What If My Child Has a Meltdown?

It happens. And it’s totally okay.
If your child has a rough day and we just can’t recover during the session, we’ll reschedule. I build flexibility into my calendar just for situations like this.
Most of the time, though, with a little prep and a lot of patience, we’ll get those sweet, joyful moments you’re hoping for.
