Planning a summer family photo session? These sessions are some of my favorite to photograph—warm evenings, golden light, and happy kids playing in the fresh air. But let’s be honest: getting the whole crew ready and out the door can feel like a big task. That’s why I’ve created this ultimate checklist to help you prepare and keep things fun, relaxed, and stress-free from start to finish.
How to Make the Most of your Summer Family Photo Session:
1. Talk to Your Kids About What to Expect

One of the best ways to set yourself up for a great summer family photo session is to prepare your kids ahead of time. Let them know you’ll be going on a little adventure. You’ll want to let them know that we’re going to explore a cool spot, hike a bit, and take a lot fun pictures while we’re there!
Framing it as a fun outing helps them feel excited and curious—not pressured or stiff. When kids feel relaxed, those sweet and natural moments shine through.
2. Plan to Arrive Early

Nothing starts a session off on the wrong foot like running late. Avoid the rush by planning to arrive at least 15 minutes early. That gives you time to find parking, do a last-minute outfit check, and get everyone settled before the photos begin.
A calm start = happy parents and cooperative kiddos.
3. Eat Before the Session

Hungry kids are cranky kids. Make sure everyone eats a light meal or snack before heading out or on the drive. Think things that won’t make a mess on outfits.
Save treats for after the session. Mid-session snack breaks can be distracting and messy—plus, a little reward after can be a great motivator!
4. Dress for the Season

One of the best parts of a summer session in Colorado? The weather! It’s warm, but usually not too hot. Choose breathable, summer-friendly outfits like linen, cotton, or gauze. For little ones, this is the perfect time for cute rompers or simple dresses.
Also, skip anything that feels stiff or uncomfortable—if your child hates that button-up shirt, it’ll show in the photos.
5. Pack Outfit Backups and Layers

Accidents happen, so having a backup outfit on hand is never a bad idea.
Colorado evenings can cool off quickly, even in the middle of summer. Be sure to bring a photo-friendly layer like a cardigan, light jacket, or neutral-colored blanket.
6. Don’t Forget Bug Spray

While we don’t usually deal with tons of bugs here, ticks can sometimes hide in tall grass. A quick spritz of bug spray before your session helps keep everyone comfortable, especially younger kids who might get upset by bugs
7. Bring Plenty of Water

Photos in the summer often involve walking to a scenic spot, and all that movement can make kids (and adults) thirsty. Bring along water bottles to help keep everyone hydrated and happy. Avoid anything that might stain clothes.
8. Be Ready to Love on Your People

Want those sweet, connected, natural-looking photos? The key is to stay affectionate. Hold hands, snuggle close, whisper something silly, or sneak in a kiss. You don’t have to perform—just be yourselves, but with a little extra love.
These moments are the ones that make your session feel magical and real.
9. Plan a Post-Session Treat

Ending the session on a high note makes a big difference. Whether it’s ice cream, a park visit, or a movie night, plan something simple and fun for after. It gives kids (and grown-ups) something to look forward to and helps keep energy up.
Sometimes we’ll even use it as a distraction, “What kind of ice cream are you getting tonight?” to help a little one refocus during the session.
10. Relax and Trust the Process

This might be the most important tip of all: Relax. If the kids are wiggly or your toddler doesn’t want to sit still, that’s okay. I’ll guide you every step of the way. I specialize in capturing real, joy-filled moments—not perfection.
Your job is to enjoy your family and soak in this special season.
