Fun Summer Activities for Families in Colorado Springs
If you’re looking for Colorado Springs summer activities, there’s no shortage of options. From outdoor adventures to simple local favorites, summer is one of the best times to explore the area with your family.
This list is a mix of some of my family’s favorite activities and a few we’re excited to try.
For Families Who Want a Little Adventure
Hiking the Crags Trail in Divide
This is one of our favorite family hikes. It’s a bit of a drive from Colorado Springs, but it’s absolutely worth it. The Crags trail is longer, so it’s best for elementary-aged kids and older. Along the way, you’ll get beautiful views, and the payoff at the top is incredible. It’s one of those hikes that feels like a true Colorado experience. This trail is closed from December 1st- June 1st, making it the perfect summer activity!
White Water Rafting the Arkansas River
This is something we’ve been wanting to try as a family. Many rafting trips leave from Cañon City, and there are options for every level. Some are very family-friendly, while others are more adventurous with bigger rapids. It’s a great way to add something a little different to your list of Colorado Springs summer activities.
Classic Colorado Experiences You Can’t Skip
Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The Cog Railway is such a fun and unique experience. We usually drive up Pikes Peak, but taking the train gives you completely different views. It travels up the opposite side of the mountain, which makes the whole experience feel new.
Flying W Ranch Chuckwagon Dinner
The Flying W Ranch is a classic Colorado experience. You get dinner along with a live show, which makes it a fun night out for the whole family. I haven’t personally done this yet, but I’ve heard great things from other families.
Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo
We love going to the Pikes Peak or Bust rodeo. It’s one of those events that’s fun for both kids and adults. It’s a great way to experience a little bit of local culture.
El Paso County Fair
The El Paso County Fair is a great summer activity for families. It usually takes place in July and has all the classic fair fun—rides, animals, food, and events happening throughout the day. Kids love seeing the animals and walking through the barns, while the rides and fair food make it feel like a full outing. It’s one of those simple, nostalgic summer experiences and an easy one to add to your list of Colorado Springs summer activities.
Unique Local Experiences Kids Will Love
Rock Ledge Ranch Living History
Rock Ledge Ranch is one of our go-to summer activities. It’s such a fun way to learn about the history of Colorado Springs. Kids can see how people lived in the past, and there’s always something interactive happening. It’s both fun and educational.
North Pole – Santa’s Workshop
This is a favorite for younger kids. It’s best for preschool and early elementary ages. My kids loved the North Pole when they were younger, but they’ve started to outgrow it a bit. If you have little ones, though, it’s definitely worth visiting.
Easy, Go-To Spots for Everyday Summer Fun
Red Rock Canyon Open Space
We love exploring Red Rock Canyon. The rocky trails are so fun for kids. One of our favorites is the Sand Canyon Quarry Loop. It’s a great option when you want something simple but still beautiful.
Pioneer Museum
The Pioneer Museum is a great free activity for families. It’s located downtown, so it’s easy to pair with lunch or a quick shopping trip. It’s also a good indoor option if you need a break from the heat.
Old Colorado City Farmers Market
This farmers market runs on Saturdays from early June through mid-October. It’s one of the best in the area and is located close to Garden of the Gods. It’s a perfect stop after a morning hike or a relaxed way to spend part of your day.
Paint Mines Interpretive Park
Paint Mines is one of the most unique places to explore near Colorado Springs. There’s an easy trail loop of about four miles, and the colorful rock formations make it feel completely different from anywhere else nearby.
Creek Water Play at North Cheyenne Canon
This has been a favorite summer activity for my kids since they were little. There’s nothing better than letting kids play in the creek on a warm day. It’s simple, fun, and something they never get tired of.
Fishing at Crystal Creek Reservoir
Crystal Creek Reservoir is one of our favorite spots to spend a day. We love fishing, paddleboarding, and just taking in the views of Pikes Peak. It’s a peaceful place that still feels like a full adventure.
