Garden of the Gods Family Photos (What Makes This Location So Special)
Garden of the Gods family photos are truly one of a kind. The red rock formations create such a bold and unique backdrop, and there really isn’t another location like it.
At sunset, this location becomes even more beautiful. The light hits the rocks in a way that adds warmth and depth, while Pikes Peak sits perfectly in the background. It’s a combination that makes your photos feel both dramatic and natural at the same time.
Where I Take Family Photos at Garden of the Gods
I have several favorite spots throughout the park, and I usually group them into two categories: easy access locations and more adventurous locations.
Easy access spots are right next to parking and require little walking. These are great for families who want convenience or have younger kids.
More adventurous locations involve about a 20-minute hike and walking on uneven rocky terrain. These spots are more private and give us a quieter, more relaxed experience.
Easy Access Locations
High Point Overlook
This is one of the most popular spots for Garden of the Gods family photos. It sits right next to the parking lot and offers beautiful views of Pikes Peak with plenty of red rocks nearby.
Because it’s so easy to access, it can get crowded, especially at sunset. Parking can also be a bit tricky during peak times. However, if you’re looking for a convenient option with great views, this is a solid choice.
Mesa Overlook
Mesa Overlook is another easy access location and a great option for families with young kids or grandparents.
We take photos right next to the parking area, which makes it very accessible. The view here is a bit different, offering that classic wide view of Garden of the Gods with Pikes Peak in the distance.
More Adventurous Spots
These are some of my favorite locations for Garden of the Gods family photos and are often what I’m known for.
The Meadow
This is the least adventurous of the hiking options. It requires about a 20-minute walk with some stairs along the way.
I especially love this spot in the summer when everything is green and we occasionally get wildflowers. It’s open, safe, and great for movement-based photos.
Garden of the Gods with Views of Pikes Peak
This is my personal favorite location. It involves about 20 minutes of hiking and a little climbing on the rocks.
The views here are incredible, and it’s usually quiet and private. We move through different areas, stopping along the way to take photos. It feels more like an experience than just a photo session.
Garden of the Gods Rocky Ridge
This location also requires about a 20-minute hike and includes some steeper, uneven terrain.
It’s best for kids who are comfortable walking on rocky ground. The views are stunning, especially with Pikes Peak behind the rock formations and the sun setting in the background.
What to Expect During a Garden of the Gods Photo Session
For my more adventurous Garden of the Gods family photos, sessions feel very natural and relaxed.
We’ll walk, stop for photos, explore a bit, and then move to another spot. This flow gives everyone small breaks and keeps kids engaged throughout the session.
It doesn’t feel rushed, and it allows for more genuine moments.
Is Garden of the Gods Good for Families with Young Kids?
Garden of the Gods can work well for families with young kids, but it depends on the location you choose.
If your child is learning to walk or isn’t comfortable on uneven ground, some of the more adventurous spots may feel challenging. In those cases, Mesa Overlook is a great option because it’s flat, safe, and still offers beautiful views.
The meadow location is another good choice. It requires a short walk, but once you arrive, it’s open and easy for kids to move around safely.
What to Wear for Garden of the Gods Family Photos
Outfits can make a big difference in how your photos come together.
Since the landscape is already bold and colorful, I recommend sticking with lighter, neutral tones. These colors help your family stand out and keep the focus on connection.
You can always add subtle pops of color, but keeping things simple works best here.
When to Book Your Session
One of the best things about Garden of the Gods family photos is that this location works year-round.
Even when other locations feel a bit dull in the winter or early spring, the red rocks still provide a strong and beautiful backdrop. Because of that, you have more flexibility when choosing your date.
